George Clooney
On occasion of the 8th World Summit the Peace Nobel Laureates and the Mayor of Rome Mr Walter Veltroni have selected as men of peace 2007 Mr George Clooney and Mr Don Cheadle. They have been awarded with the “Peace Summit Award 2007″ for their commitment in spreading the values of Peace and respect of human rights in the world.
MOTIVATION
The appointees are officially awarded since “their strong engagement in favour of pacification in the tortured Dafour region, for having contributed to saving human lives and to alleviating the suffering of the civil populations victims of the war”.
George Clooney and Don Cheadle have founded in co-partnership with Matt Damon Brad Pitt and Jerry Weintraub of the association “Not on our Watch” with the aim to draw world’s attention on the tragedy in Darfour. The Association has donated more than 5 million USD to Darfour this year.
DON CHEADLE
Don Cheadle is one of the leading protagonists of the film-documentary by Theodore Braun “Darfour Now” which explores the conflict in Darfour through the direct stories of six different people engaged ‘in the field’ to stop the genocide in Sudan, a war which has already killed more than 400.00 people and created more than 2 million refugees.
GEORGE CLOONEY
George Clooney, along with his father and journalist Nick, is the protagonist of the brave documentary “A Journey to Darfour” realized during their trip to Sudan. The story documents the drama of the victims of the harsh civil war among the rebels and the Government of Khartoum. It has been promoted by the major American networks to show public opinion the reality of the genocide in Africa.
THE AWARD
The “Peace Summit Award 2007″ is a copper sculpture created by the artist Oliviero Rainaldi especially for this occasion.
The sculpture wants to symbolize humanity living a new dimension facing it with its head upwards, as if it was observing a hypothetical “sky”, and tearing apart the introflexed surface representing space and time. The central beam of light is obtained from the fading external side beams which emphasize the gold at the back, symbol of the majesty of humanity which has hopes and wishes for a better future.
OLIVIERO RAINALDI
Oliviero Rainaldi has been working for many years for a prestigious religious and laic assignor and his works have been exposed in the most important galleries of contemporary art. Rainaldi is considered one of the most important Italian sculptors of his generation which comes immediately after the Pomodoro and Paladino’s but which holds techniques, stile and communicative power different form its predecessors.
For this reason it can be asserted that his works fully represent sculpturesque contemporary Italian art today.
