6 july L'Aquila

The event was attended by Mr. George Clooney, who has presented an unfinished work in progress version of Wes Andersonís FANTASTIC MR FOX to honor the earthquake victims of L’Aquila on Thursday 9th July at San Demetrio Camp. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop-motion animated film directed by Mr. Anderson and based on the classic book by Roald Dahl. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, it is a story about wild animals, underground tunnels, explosions, flames, burning things, a brilliantly clever fox, and three of the meanest, nastiest, ugliest farmers you’ll ever know. The project sets out to arrange an international event to rekindle hope and to encourage a rebirth of the villages so severely hit by the April earthquake. A vital resurgence can begin with concrete actions performed by courageous people who envisage history and culture as the main driving forces for reconstruction.

THE CINEMA HALL AND THE SAN DEMETRIO CAMP

The San Demetrio Camp was the first one to be set up by the disaster relief authorities. Today, over 15,000 people, including women and children, live in tents in the area hit by the earthquake. These camps have been fully equipped by disaster relief authorities and organized like small towns; the ruins of the villages affected by the quake can still be seen nearby. In the spirit of human resilience, life is slowly getting back to normal and in the camps the people waiting for a safe home, due to come sooner or later, are reorganizing their lives. They are again going to school and resuming trade and the professions, as well as enjoying cultural activities. This is why the association called “Arti e Spettacolo” with the help of the Nobel Peace Laureates Summit, Twentieth Century Fox, Lancia, Eli Lilly, BNP, Gammarad and Fratelli Silveri has decided to resume community life with cultural activities above all the cinema. At San Demetrio as in other camps in the area, cinema tents are being set up. Besides hosting film shows for the people there, they have also become the main meeting points for the reorganization of community life. The challenge is now to create a semi-permanent facility to serve most of the towns in the area of the earthquake epicenter. This means serving a community with a population totalling 10,000. At San Demetrioís camp “Arti e Spettacolo” association started film viewings, courses for youngs and adults, summer activties, in collaboration with the School District and the Comunità Montana Sirentina. A Music school has now opened, with the partnership of ìIcarusî association. San Demetrioís Municipality is going to restore a city hall where ìArti e Spettacoloî will create a Library of Arts. After the “Sfollati News” experience, a weekly new- spaper managed by students, “Zeronove”, a newspaper led by San Demetrio kids, was launched.

George Clooney and the Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams will inaugurate, on Thursday 9th july at 6 pm at  San Demetrio Camp (AQ), the Nobel for Peace Hall.

George Clooney and the Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams are to honour the earthquake victims, by inaugurating together with the Permanent Secretariat of Nobel Peace Laureates Summits, Twentieth Century Fox and the “Arti e Spettacolo” association, the Nobel for Peace Hall -a cinema, but also a permanent and multipurpose facility- at San Demetrio camp, near L’Aquila.

Official opening : Thursday 9th July at 6pm, at the San Demetrio camp, L’Aquila.

All this was made possible, thanks to San Demetrio’s Municipality, which provided the land.

The event will be attended by Mr. Walter Veltroni, Co-President of the Permanent Secretariat of Nobel Peace Laureates Summits. The inauguration will be followed by the projection of some clips from the unfinished work in progress version of Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr Fox”. Also to be presented is the Italian preview of the film “Ice age 3″.

Clooney will visit the disaster areas and he will meet some representatives of the communities hit by the quake. He will also visit the San Demetrio Camp, one of the first camps set up after the April earthquake.

The project has been conceived by some of the earthquake victims with the help of the “Arti e Spettacolo” association, which decided to promote information and cultural activities as driving forces for rebirth. At the San Demetrio camp “Arti e Spettacolo” association set up film viewings, courses for the young and for adults and summer activities, in collaboration with the School District and the Comunità Montana Sirentina. The Music School is now open, in partnership with the “Icarus” association. San Demetrio’s Municipality is going to restore a city hall where “Arti e Spettacolo” will create a Library of Arts. Following on from the “Sfollati News” initiative, a weekly newspaper managed by students, comes “Zeronove”, a newspaper produced by San Demetrio kids that has now been launched. The Nobel for Peace Hall will be used for all those activities that the “Arti e Spettacolo” association will organize in the art, culture and entertainment sectors (shows, films, courses, exhibitions, hospitality to artists, art workshops, summer classes for foreign students), in collaboration with San Demetrio’s Municipality. The project aims at making the Hall a cultural pole of excellence for art and entertainment and helping bring normality back into the lives of the families that were struck by disaster.

About

secretariat nobel peaceThe Permanent Secretariat of Nobel Peace Laureates Summits derives from a new and more broadly based collaboration between the International Gorbachev Foundation and the City of Rome for realizing the World Summits of Nobel Peace Laureates. The Permanent Secretariat, based in Rome, is a non-profit association without political aims.
As well as organizing the tasks of the Summit, the Secretariat monitors the activities of Nobel Peace Laureates, while promoting the adoption of the "Charter for a world without violence" and supporting the work of the Nobel, who participate in the annual Summits at Rome, as mediators in various conflicts around the world (Article 3 of the Statute).
