PRESS RELEASE
H.H. the Dalai Lama confirms his participation to the Summit
“I am very pleased with the decision to award the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Prof. Liu Xiaobo. I will participate in the XI World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates to be held in Hiroshima from November 12th through 14th in the spirit of involving all other Peace Laureates to appeal to China for Liu’s immediate release,” says Lech Walesa, ex-leader of Solidarnosc and former President of Poland.
Liu Xiaobo was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 8th.
The 11th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates will open in Hiroshima amidst the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the APEC summit in Yokohama and will be attended by 25 Nobel Peace Laureates, prominent peace advocates and representatives of various international organizations. Included: H.H. the Dalai Lama and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
This will be the first time that H.H. the Dalai Lama will be in the same country along with Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barak Obama, both expected to attend the APEC meeting in Yokohama.
President Obama, as the 2009 Nobel Laureate, has been invited to attend the Hiroshima Summit.
Along with H.H the Dalai Lama and President Gorbachev, co-chair of World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, the following Laureates have confirmed their attendance: Frederik Willem De Klerk, Lech Walesa, José Ramos-Horta, Mohamed ElBaradei, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Shirin Ebadi and Jody Williams.
While applauding this year’s award to Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel For Peace Summit would like to remind the media of the harsh conditions of two other prominent dissidents and Peace Laureates who have been detained: Burmese pro-democray leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose imminent release has been announced, and Northern Ireland non-violent leader Mairead Corrigan Maguire, who had been detained incommunicado for seven days in Israel before being expelled from the country.
Maguire has confirmed her attendance at the Hiroshima Summit.
