On the occasion of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, a group of Nobel Laureates including
President F.W. De Klerk, Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Mariead Maguire, Elie Wiesel, Betty
Williams, John Hume, the Nobel Organizations IPPNW and PUGWASH Conferences, signed a
statement addressed to the Chinese Government in which they reaffirm their hope for a broader
extension of human freedoms in China and propose to engage their selves in a negotiation for the
early release of their fellow Laureate Liu Xiaobo.
The initiative arises from the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates
which launched an appeal to all the Nobel Peace Prize recipients to join this initiative, by endorsing
the statement reported below:
“In view of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the Nobel Peace Laureates discussed the situation of
our fellow Nobel Peace Laureate, Liu Xiaobo.
We, the undersigned Nobel Peace Laureates, commend the People’s Republic of China for the
expansion of economic freedom that has vastly improved the lives of hundreds of millions of
Chinese citizens.
We believe that the broader extension of human freedoms would further contribute to the success
and happiness of the Chinese people.
We would accordingly appreciate the opportunity of engaging with the Government of the People’s
Republic of China to discuss the status of Liu Xiaobo and to establish what steps might be taken to
facilitate his early release from detention.”
