
David Whitefoord Steward was born on 23 May 1945 and was educated in Canada, England and South Africa. He served in the Department of Foreign Affairs between 1966 and 1985 in Canberra, Ottawa and at the United Nations where he was Ambassador from 1981 – 1982. Between 1983 and 1985 he was involved in negotiations on the independence of Namibia. Mr Steward was Head of the South African Communication Service from 1985 until 1992. In August 1992 he was appointed as Chief Government Spokesman and in November as Director-General in the Office of President F W de Klerk. He retired from the public service in October 1996 and in 1999 co-authored F W de Klerk’s “The Last Trek, a New Beginning”. He and the former President established the F W de Klerk Foundation in June 1999 and its Centre for Constitutional Rights in 2006. He has served as the Foundation’s Executive Director since its establishment.
